NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It’s amazing what a few years and $11 Million can do for a park that was already pretty special. Centennial Park in the heart of Nashville’s West End looks amazing. The park has been given a big makeover. Brush has been removed, walkways have been added and improved. Even driving around the park is better than ever.
The 19-acre great lawn was looking a little shabby before the makeover, but now, it looks lush and full. It’s also been improved with a fancy new underground drainage system. Around the lawn, crews have added extensive landscaping and paving. It looks fantastic and at the center of it all, the crown jewel… Nashville’s historic Parthenon. Built during the 1897 Centennial Exposition as an exact copy of the one in Greece.

Nashville has long been known as the “Athens of the South.” That nickname was the inspiration for constructing the Parthenon on this site. Several buildings created for the Exposition were based on other buildings in ancient Greece, but the Parthenon is the only exact replica and the only one preserved that still stands here. It even includes a 42-foot statue of the goddess Athena inside.
Besides being a beautiful building and tourist attraction, the Parthenon is also home to an art museum and is host to a number of special events through the year. Centennial Park is also the site of many outdoor concerts, plays, festivals and other community events.
