We may normally think of June as the most popular summer month to get married, but July remains a favorite… if you can stand the heat. And, while the 4th of July is not exactly a romantic holiday, there’s no reason you can’t have an incredible wedding with a patriotic theme. Here are some of the top ideas I’ve found for your 4th of July wedding.
A red, white and blue wedding doesn’t have to be cheesy. As a matter of fact, it can be fun, whimsical and yes, very beautiful.

FLOWERS – To make them a little more summer-like, you can arrange for combinations of red, white and blue flowers to be potted in large flower pots. This can be especially striking with American flags stuck in the pots.
DRESSES AND SUITS – You can easily make your wedding party’s clothes red, white and blue. Just be careful, you don’t want it to be a little too “theme-park-y.” But a nice navy linen jacket with a red bowtie and neutral linen slacks can be very handsome and then you can always pick red, white OR blue for the bridesmaids.
4th FOOD – Who doesn’t like barbeque or picnic food for a wedding? You can even grill out and have hamburgers and hotdogs. People love this kind of food at a wedding. It’s a huge break from the more formal baked chicken or prime rib. It lends itself to a more relaxed atmosphere and people can have a lot of fun.
PERFECT ENDING – What could be more perfect to end you big day than a fireworks show and maybe even a few sparklers for your guests? If you have friends or family members who are comfortable with fireworks, you can ask them to help out… but I recommend working with your venue to find a professional. SAFETY FIRST! Everyone loves a fireworks show. Yours may not exactly be on a huge scale, but even a modest display can make for some amazing memories.
MORE IDEAS – If you’re looking for more ideas for a patriotic party for your wedding day, Martha Stewart Weddings has tons of suggestions, including:
- A huge American flag on the side of an outbuilding or barn at your venue.
- American Flag socks for your groomsmen and bright red heels for your bridesmaids.
- Patriotic Wedding Cake, cupcakes, cookies or tarts to make your tables bright.
- Patriotic petals for your flower girls.
- Memorials for family members who have served in the military.
