Ok, so we can all admit it… this may be the least exciting St. Patrick’s Day ever, but I’m still going to wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Being a “Mc” (as in McKinney) person, I’ve always held a certain affinity for this holiday! This time around, a lot of people can’t even leave their home, so there’s no reason to wear green, and there’s no danger of anyone pinching you for not wearing green. I guess you would just get an elbow bump.
Maybe the saddest of all… the bars on lower Broadway are all shutdown. But for a moment, let’s look at another aspect of this day: The luck of the Irish!
I really count myself so incredibly lucky on this St. Patrick’s Day! Just a couple of weeks ago, a massive tornado ripped through my community, missing my neighborhood by a few yards. My nephew’s school was destroyed, my grocery store and pet store down the street were heavily damaged. I can walk down the road to people’s homes that were destroyed. Mercifully, my home was spared. My entire family was spared. I consider myself extremely fortunate.
Now, we are dealing with a widespread public health crisis and again, mercifully, I have been spared and so have my family members and friends. I have not been to work since the beginning of this month, but I am in a profession that allows me to continue to be paid as this health crisis moves through.
I see so many people hurting: People who work in the service industry or have their own small businesses. They aren’t getting a paycheck if they don’t work. Many of them may have been a paycheck away from disaster to begin with. I am very lucky! I know that I am lucky and I feel very blessed.
So, of course, it’s a little disappointing that some of the best traditions of St. Patrick’s Day won’t be happening today, but the very heart of the celebration is still very much alive. Today, as the rain falls, maybe a little glimmer of sunlight will create a rainbow. I urge you to find your own pot of gold and blessings at the end of it! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
